  1. Many nouns designating people are formed by adding the suffix -и́ст to a noun. For example, ша́хматы chess – шахмати́ст a chess player. To form a female noun, add another suffix -ка. For example, шахмати́ст – шахмати́стка. Remember that the suffix -и́ст is always stressed. Study these nouns below:

    бейсбо́л бейсболи́ст бейсболи́стка baseball player

    футбо́л футболи́ст футболи́стка soccer player

  2. The present and future tense verbs are the same for both the masculine and feminine nouns. For example,
    Э́тот шахмати́ст прекра́сно игра́ет. Э́та шахмати́стка прекра́сно игра́ет. Активи́ст бу́дет здесь че́рез полчаса́. Активи́стка бу́дет здесь че́рез полчаса́.
  3. The past tense verbs differ for the masculine and feminine nouns. For example,
    Э́тот соли́ст пел на конце́рте. Э́та соли́стка пе́ла на конце́рте.
  4. The modifiers differ for the masculine and feminine nouns. For example,
    Э́тот арти́ст о́чень краси́вый. Э́та арти́стка о́чень краси́вая.
  5. Substitute the masculine nouns with the pronoun он and feminine with the pronoun она́. For example,
    – Тенниси́ст придёт че́рез час? – Нет, он уже́ здесь.
    На́ша футболи́стка ещё до́ма. Она́ ещё не пришла́.
